Department of Physics

The Department of Physics was established in 1962 in Kandaswami Kandar’s college. In the year 2000, M.Sc., Physics course was introduced. Later, in the year 2008, the department becomes Research department by introducing M.Phil., (Physics) and Ph.D.,(Physics) courses. The Physics department is a specialized department that focuses on the study of physics, which is the branch of science that deals with the fundamental principles governing the behavior of matter and energy in the physical world.

The curriculum in the Department of Physics (Periyar University syllabus) may cover a broad range of topics, including Classical mechanics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Quantum mechanics, Optics, Nuclear physics and other specialized areas of Physics. These subjects are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the principles and concepts of Physics, as well as to develop skills in the areas such as problem-solving, critical thinking, data analysis and experimental techniques.

Faculty members provide instruction, mentorship and guidance to help the students for developing their understanding of physics and enhance skills in experimental and theoretical physics. In addition to coursework, the Physics department may provide opportunities for students to engage in hands-on experiments, internships to further enrich their understanding and application of physics.

The Department of Physics organize seminars and workshops periodically on various physics topics, inviting guest speakers and experts to share their knowledge and insights. These events provide opportunities for the students to learn from practitioners in the field, engage in discussions about cutting-edge research and broaden their understanding of the different areas of Physics.

Furthermore, the Department of Physics may engage in collaborative research projects with other departments, institutions, or organizations to promote interdisciplinary research and applications of physics in various fields.

Overall, the Department of Physics plays a crucial role in providing students with a solid foundation in the principles and concepts of Physics, as well as developing their skills in experimental and theoretical physics.
